1. Prolonged sitting. People usually sit through heavy traffic as they drive to and from work and then sit at the computer or behind their desks all day. What you may not know is that too much sitting can take a toll on your back. That is why it is important for you to get up and stretch for a short period at least once every hour. If you have to drive long distances, find a safe place to park so that you can get up and stretch once in a while.

2. Weak muscles. Needless to say, weak muscles are more prone to suffer the kind of injury and damage that lead to back pain. Protect your back from such injuries by strengthening all of your major muscle groups. You don't have to spend countless hours at the gym for this purpose; a good combination of moderate aerobic exercise and strength training should do the trick.

3. Poor posture. When your mom kept telling you not to slouch, she actually had a point! When you exhibit poor posture, your spine is thrown into an unnatural alignment, thus putting pressure on your back muscles and causing back pain. Be aware of your posture throughout the day and use adequate back support to keep your back straight while at work.

4. Wrong lifting techniques. Many back injuries happen as a result of lifting or moving heavy objects. But, it's not so much the act of lifting that's causing the injury as it is the manner in which you lift or move a heavy object. Most people bend from the waist and lift with the strength of their backs. The proper way to do it is to bend your knees, get a good hold of the object and then lift with the strength of your legs.

5. Stiff muscles and joints. There are a number of reasons why your muscles and joints become stiff and cause back pain. This can easily be avoided by doing some simple stretching exercises to loosen up tight muscles and promote more flexibility in your joints.

6. Training the wrong muscles. You might become too obsessed with developing your show muscles that you neglect to train the muscles that really matter where health and safety are concerned. When you train, be sure to train all of your major muscle groups, rather than focusing on those muscles that are merely for show.

7. Training the wrong way. To strengthen your back and leg muscles, be careful not to spend too much time on exercise machines. These machines only serve to weaken your back. You would do better to exercise with free weights standing up, if you seriously want to avoid back pain.
