7 Habits of Highly Successful Students - Habit VII

Habit VII: Teach and be Taught

Highly successful students are seldom selfish. They are often ready to share their knowledge with their friends and to help their classmates with their homework and revisions. More often than not, these students are also willing to go that extra mile to tutor' their peers when the need arises. You may find their actions puzzling. Why would these students erode their competitive advantage by teaching the weaker students or, some might say, their competitors'?

The driver behind Habit VII of highly successful students is this little-known fact: Reading initiates understanding; practicing enhances understanding; but teaching brings understanding to a new level which transcends the limits of most students. Highly successful students know this fact. They are aware that through teaching others, they can better integrate all they have learned and attain a heightened level of comprehension. They are also cognizant that tutoring others can help challenge their current assumptions and hence reduce their blind spots for the various subjects. Therefore, these students are willing to make a habit out of teaching their peers.
