7 Television Shows That Made Doctors Popular

The late 90s and early 2000s saw a spurt of television dramas and sitcoms that either

revolved around doctors or had a central character playing a doctor.

Whether these shows did much to increase business for doctors is unknown, what is known however is that with these programs, the medical profession gained huge popularity as a whole and doctors lives were not private anymore.

This article highlights the top 7 television shows that gave a glimpse into the working and personal lives of the medical community.

1. ER George Clooneys immensely popular television show revolving around a fictional hospitals emergency room ran for an astonishing 15 seasons. This award winning medical drama subtly glorified the lives of doctors, whilst giving viewers a sneak peek into the inner workings of a hospital.

2. Scrubs- Best friends who cant get enough of each other. One, a popular doctor, the other, a funny surgeon. Scrubs was probably the only comedy show on television that focused on the comical aspects of Hospital life.

3. Two and a half men- The show was not really focussed on doctors or hospitals. But Alan, who was one of the two and a half protagonists of the sitcom, was shown to be a chiropractor. Even though he was extremely proud of his own profession, Alans Doctor skills were rarely taken seriously by his friends or his own brother. His constant effort to remind friends that he was a Chiro added to the shows comic element.

4. Greys Anatomy- Residents, interns, surgeons, chief and doctor were just some of the words that were almost synonymous with this extremely popular television show of the mid 2000s. The show portrayed doctors in the best way possible, showing some of them to be almost heroic. But the most extraordinary feature that persisted throughout was the competition between doctors and the lengths they go to, in order to stay on top, sometimes even putting personal friendships at bay.

5. House- This television programme focussed on the life of an unconventional medical genius, Dr Gregory House. It was a refreshing change to see an unusual Doctor, one who was a drug addict but yet a genius whose diagnosis, albeit different from his fellow physicians was always right.

6. Private Practice- A spin off of Greys anatomy, this show mainly focussed on the life of Dr Addison Montogomery. Even though it piggybacked on the success of the original, the show did a fair run and gave a good insight into the life of a doctor practising privately.

7. Nip/Tuck- This drama series focussed on surgeons, particularly the kind that performed cosmetic plastic surgery. It was centred on two plastic surgeons and their professional and personal lives. It gave a glance into the big world of artificial surgery and the bizarre procedures performed by doctors for money.

Medical dramas have been and are a popular television genre. While some shows elevate the lives of doctors, others give a very interesting but realistic peek into their daily existence.
