7 Truths of Weightlifting Workouts - Old School Tips From Bodybuilding Legend Charles Atlas

Weightlifting is a subject that we tend to think that we know everything about

, today there is a lot of misinformation everywhere and its difficult to know what is correct and what isn't.

I got to read an ancient article a short while ago, it was from a magazine that came out before world war 2 in the 1920s and it was comprised of some pointers from great body building legend Charles Atlas.

The pointers in the article were some of the very best that I have ever read and whats great about it is that it still holds up today as well as it did back then, I don't think that any of today's fitness gurus can give advice as good as this, here it is.

1. Set A Specific Goal

We hear a lot of this advice from self help gurus nowadays, before world war 2 self help didn't exist and yet this same advice is given.

In essence you must know what your outcome is and work backwards from it, decide how much you want to weight and what you will look like than stick to a program that corresponds with your goals.

2. Never Miss A Single Workout

Charles Atlas was a guy who never ever gave up, he worked very hard to become what everyone back than referred to as "the worlds most perfect man".

The issue is that in the beginning we are excited to start doing exercises yet as time passes by we get too involved in the process of the exercises themselves, get bored with it and quit, completely failing to remember what exactly we sought in the beginning.

Point is you should never skip a single workout, always remind yourself of the reason why you started working out.

3. Treat Your Body Like Its Your New Car

If you get a new car do you put some mud into the motor and expect it to run efficiently? and yet the engine is made up of steel, we obviously are not made of steel and still we abuse our bodies with all kinds of junk and expect ourselves to get muscle gains from working out in the gym.

Treat your body like a brand new car that you just bought, take good care of it by putting only the preferred food in it and you will be treated with better results.

Sleeping enough will also help you gain muscle, the ancient article that I read mentioned that even back then in the 1920s people had a bad habit of getting less than the optimal amount of sleep.

4. Totally Concentrate On The Task At Hand

When you come into the gym chances are you'll notice that there are people that came there to talk to others as if the gym is a social club and when they finally do work out they seem unfocused.

Your job is to work out, when you come to the gym you must entirely concentrate on what you are doing and prevent letting outside noise distract you.

5. "Never Exercise Beyond Fatigue Point"

When you are fatigued from doing exercise you should stop, in my teenage years I used to force myself to carry on even when I couldn't, this resulted in overtraining and stagnated my results.

You cannot force your body to get bigger faster than it can.

6. Keep Stress To A Minimum

Nowadays we have scientific proof of how stress can prevent muscle growth, whenever were under stress out bodies release a chemical called cortisol.

Cortisol breaks down our muscle tissue and bones, an excessive amount emotional stress can even lead to an early demise, I've heard stories of guys in their early 20s who had very busy lives getting heart attacks.

So basically try to look at the finer parts of your life and be a little more positive, taking care of this this will have drastic results with your muscle gains if you are often under pressure.

7. Get Plenty of Water And Oxygen

Charles Atlas recommended not just drinking a lot of water but additionally taking regular baths to unclog your body's skin pores and let the body take in air.

Speaking of breathing Atlas additionally advised going outside to get air, we tend to forget that hours of sitting at home can have negative effects on our overall health and it can even slow down muscle growth.
