7 Ways to Save Energy at Home

? That's right, that clock on your DVR, your iPhone charging cord and toaster is still sucking electricity even though it may not be in use. Here are 7 tips that can help you save energy at home everyday.

Unplug electric cords when they aren't in use. Many cords continue to pull energy even if they aren't charging a device.

Turn your A/C up a few degrees when you aren't in the house. Yeah, yeah we know. It's hot outside, but why are you cooling your house when there you aren't home. Increasing the temperature in the room could save you a significant amount of money, especially if you are on-peak/off-peak plans.

Consider utilizing a power strip for items you can turn off all together when not in use such as your computer, monitor and printer. Those devices don't need to be on unless the computer is on.

Use a fan. Research has shown that using a fan over AC could save you several hundreds of dollars per year.

Turn off lights when you aren't in the room. This is no brainer. Like Nike says "Just do it!"

Wash laundry with cold instead of hot water. Hot water requires heating, heating require electricity. If you can use cold water, do it. There are a variety of detergents on the market that are specifically formulated for cold water.

Consider installing compact florescent (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. LEDs are still very expensive, but CFLs are extremely affordable and you may even qualify for rebates or tax incentives for installing them. CFLs use 20-30% less energy than their incandescent counterparts.
