Short text messages can be used almost any form of digital information and is popular to send ringtones, business cards, clip art etc. However richer form of multimedia like color photographs, video, animations etc. Cannot be transmitted using text messages. For those other forms of more sophisticated technology have been developed.

Short message service technology is not available on all kinds of mobile phones but fortunately all GSM mobile phones have this technology support. Certain CDMA mobile phones do not have this technology enabled in them. Where data and voice networks are concerned, the short message service is designed as a pager replacement technology for digital phones. SMS can also be used to signal devices to make Switched circuit connections or other functions.

Today, short text message technology is a big hit worldwide and vast amount of messages are being exchanged every day.
