A Boston Landmark To Revere: The Paul Revere House

Originally built in 1680, the Paul Revere House is a 3-story colonial home at 19 North Square in Boston, Massachusetts in the citys North End

. As a National Historic Landmark, the house is operated as a nonprofit Boston Landmark and Museum by the Paul Revere Memorial Association, and welcomes more than 250,000 people each year.

What attracts so many visitors to the Paul Revere House?

The fascination, in part, is due to the house itself and its architecture, which, though typical of the time, is the only surviving public or commercial building of its style. Considered post-medieval in the era between 1620 and 1710, the Paul Revere House is crafted with unpainted post and beam construction. Gables and the overhanging 1st floor have decorative brackets and pendant ornaments. The casement windows have diamond panes and the doors expose decorative nail patterns.

Although it has undergone extensive restoration, the Paul Revere House retains its original framework. It was initially built as a 1-room plan with an end chimney that was 2-1/2 stories tall and the structure was placed on the Increase Mather Parsonage site.

When Paul Revere moved in almost a century later and resided there from 1770 to 1800, the Paul Revere House had likely been enlarged to 3 full stories. On April 18, 1775, when Revere embarked on his famous ride, the main portion of the house fronted the North Square, which was full of British soldiers, making his exit by the front door too dangerous.

Although the architecture and the attention to detail it took by architect Joseph Everett Chandler to restore and preserve the Paul Revere House as an example of a 17th-century urban house in 1908 adds to it being a treasured Boston Landmark, it was Revere himself who makes the house so noteworthy.

Prior to his brave Midnight Ride, Revere was employed by the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Massachusetts Committee of Safety as an express rider to carry news, messages, and copies of resolutions as far away as Philadelphia and New York.

Joseph Warren called upon the prosperous and prominent Boston silversmith to warn the Massachusetts Provincial Congress in Concord that there was likely to be troop movement by the British.

Under shadow, Revere slipped out of the Paul Revere House and met up with Robert Newman who he enlisted to send a signal to alert colonists in Charlestown by a lantern one if by land if the troops used the land route, or 2 lanterns 2 if by sea if they used the Charles River. Revere then crossed the River by rowboat, landed safely in Charlestown and rode to Lexington, warning patriots along the route, many of whom set out on horseback to carry the warnings on.

The ride successfully allowed the militia to repel the British troops in Concord all the way back to Boston.

After the war, Revere remained in the Paul Revere House until 1800, after which years of hard use took their toll earning the house a description as a quaint, dilapidated wooden house with queer chimneys and overhanging upper storyThis is the oldest building in Boston gradually sinking into utter ruin.

But its in near ruin no more. Carefully tended and restored, today the Paul Revere House is a revered part of American history and among the most treasured of Boston Landmarks.
