A Brief Overview Of Coca Cola Cherry

A little like Vegemite, Coca-Cola Cherry, or Cherry Coke as it is widely known

, is one of those things you either love or hate. Its black and white (or should that be red?). There simply is no in between.

Coca Cola Cherry is believed to have been born in the mid 1980s on the back of the popular practice in some drug stores and diners of having their soda fountains dispense Cherry Cola - Coca Cola mixed with a cherry flavoured syrup.

Produced and distributed by The Coca-Cola Company, the cherry flavored version was initially tested with some fanfare and immediate success at the 1982 World Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. An event that was attended by more than 11 million people and also saw the debut of boxed milk and touch screen televisions. Three years later the drink was rolled out into mainstream production where it became the third variation of the original Coke. The others being Classic Coke and Diet Coke. It was launched congruently with New Coke, a product that never took off and was eventually scrapped in 1992.

Coca-Cola Cherry has been introduced into a number of overseas markets and enjoys steady success in the UK, Scandinavia and Western Europe as well as South Korea, Japan and Peru. However it also bombed in a number of other countries most notably, and somewhat surprisingly, Canada, of all places. It also didnt last too long in Australia.

Despite being launched in Australia amongst much expectation (Coca-Cola research revealed that 66% of Aussie teans said they would probably or definitely buy Cherry Coke and a whopping 74% believed it was new, different and unique) and a big PR push that featured a major TV and Advertising campaign, as well as the employment of teams of roller skating girls who persuaded people to sample the new product on the streets and in cinemas, Cherry Coke was eventually pulled due to conservative tastes and poor sales. Although it is still available today from specialist online retailers like Moo-Lolly-Bar.

Notwithstanding Cherry Coke is still going strong in the USA. Supported by a new promotional campaign which saw rapper Jay-Z chosen as its spokesman, as well as a significant redesign of the products label which incorporated notable input from the music mogul, the product was officially renamed Coca Cola Cherry in 2007. It has a very loyal fan base, most prominantly amongst the students of Indiana University's Bloomington campus who voted it their official drink in 2008.

Coca Cola Cherry is also available as a diet version called Coca-Cola Cherry Zero. But this is not as popular.
