Journalism can be classified in two areas: (i) Print Journalism and (ii) Electronic (Audio/Visual) Journalism, but today web journalism is the third area of journalism which is becoming famous day-by-day. Print journalism includes newspapers, magazines, journals, digests and news agencies. In print media, one can work as bureau chief, an editor, sub editor, reporter, columnist, special correspondent, correspondents, feature writer, photo journalist, cartoonist, special editor, critic and proof reader. Electronic journalism includes working for Radio, Television and Web. As radio journalism is based on sound, so voice is very important. To get into radio journalism, you should have good voice and clarity in your pronunciation.
Here, you can work as reporter, news editor, journalist, special correspondent, radio jockey, announcer, and news reader, voice over artist, technician, programmer, station head and program head. In television, you can work as Editor, reporter, journalist, researcher, production worker, floor manager, sound technician, light manager, camera man, sound presenter, mixer, program head, artist and news reader. In the web journalism, skilled people are required to maintain sites by web newspaper, which is only meant for the special web users. Today, most of the top newspapers and magazines have their web editions. Online journalism promises updated news content at no cost. The web journalist has to make news sharp and interesting. Editing and presentation is the most important function because web users tend to scan the pages without reading them completely.
You can start off with a salary of Rs. 3000 to 5000 as a trainee. As a reporter, you can expect to make Rs. 6000 to 10,000. An editor can earn a salary of Rs. 8000 to 15,000. Perks like housing and traveling are also provided. But it can be vary from organization to organization. Some newspapers and channels do not pay anything to the trainees. In fact, some big names charge fees from students for internship.
You can do a course in journalism right after you pass your senior secondary examination [10+2]. You have the choice of taking up a professional degree in journalism after completing under graduation in any subject. A background in humanities is preferred to be taken up in a particular language. There are many institutes which offer this course at graduation and post graduation level, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi, Benaras Hindu University, Rabindra Bharati University, IIMC Delhi, JNU Delhi, and Jamia Millia Islamia are among the few.
