A College Education Within Reach: Obama Grants For Moms

For many people, a bright future starts with good education

. The President has on many occasions emphasized the need for a strong education system. Free money through grants and scholarships is only the beginning.

Expenses like college tuition and housing grow even as the economy suffers. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Unfortunately some students turn away from higher education because it's too expensive. Single moms are especially affected in a bad way. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. The President has attempted to help by encouraging more grants for single mothers to attend school. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. These grants award a student over $5,000 to go to college. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. These grants can be used to cover many of the miscellaneous college expenses.

Single moms should also consider the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This program allows the first $4,000 of education expenses to be free. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. Since many single working mothers have low incomes, these programs are a major help. Study options are wide open. Moms and students of all kinds can go to school with a little less to worry about.

Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill.

In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
