A College Education Within Reach: Obama Scholarships For Moms
If you want to be successful, getting a good education is a good start
. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. Scholarships and grants are only a small part of the education system makeover.
One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. Besides tuition and housing, fees for books, travel and eating are often not covered. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. A large number of these people are working mothers. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. More scholarships for single moms is one way to improve the situation. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.
There's also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. Since many single working mothers have low incomes, these programs are a major help. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Moms and students of all kinds can go to school with a little less to worry about.
Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Another goal is to encourage more students to attend community colleges. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill.
In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
