A Condensed Guide To Repairing And Preventing Scratches On Your Vehicle
My husband and I were fortunate enough to obtain an almost-new popular four-door compact car fairly soon after we were married
. Though most people in our circumstances might have taken the car for granted, my spouse has taken great care to keep it in excellent condition.
However, despite his efforts, unfortunate mishaps in the past two years have taken their toll. I am sad to say that there are now a few scratches and dings that may add character and experience to our car--but they unfortunately detract from its overall value and smooth appearance.
But lucky for us, we don't have to just let those flaws stand. Instead, we can do our part to repair them. If you find yourself in the same situation, you will want to move quickly to fix the damage.
First, you will want to carefully clean the area with plain soap and water. Don't scrub vigorously, as this might tear away more paint than necessary. After that, use a degreasing agent to remove any grease or wax in the area.
If there is any rust, then you should use a wire brush or sandpaper to gently scrape it away. Once all this has been done, then first apply several thin coats of clear paint over the scratch. Be sure to wipe excess paint from the brush to keep from applying globs to the car.
Allow the clear coats to dry thoroughly before covering it with the necessary coats of colored paint. Each coat should have approximately twenty minutes to set before you apply the next one. Just like with the clear paint, you should wipe the excessive paint from the brush.
This will dry completely and then you need to coat the colored paint with additional clear paint. Give the scratch three days, and then use a soft cloth to apply the rubbing compound.
This technique will be able to heal many scratches, but of course, the ideal situation is to prevent them. Many newer cars have little protection against scratches and dings, particularly on the doors, so you may want to take steps of your own to fortify the paint on your car.
Body side molding is made to match your vehicle precisely, offering an extra defense against everyday wear and tear in addition to minor accidents and scrapes.
For more "everyday," practical practices, you should be sure to keep your car clean. Dirty buildup probably causes more scratches than anything, so don't neglect your car!
