A Digital Life - Digital Data Storage Options
From entertaining baby videos to our most confidential business correspondence
, our lives revolve around digital data. Digital data storage is inexpensive, and our demands always growing. Manufacturers offer the average computer user a variety of digital data storage solutions, but buyers beware. It is necessary to define your data storage needs and choose the method best suited to your situation.
Backup desktop hard drives are the first and best line of protection should your computer crash and take your data with it. A desktop hard drive should be at least twice as large as your existing hard drive. This solution should provide the average computer user with enough backup for the life of the computer.
For multiple computer data storage, a significantly larger solution is required. A server with automatic data backup software is an option. At a set time, data from all computers on a network is backed up to a tape drive, large hard drive or RAID system. A network attached storage device (NAS) that connects to your server is yet another data storage alternative.
For the last few years, USB thumb drives or data sticks have enabled users to store upwards of 32 Gigabits of data (as of this writing). This is a data storage solution for only the most modest of computer users, but it allows easy transfer of data from one computer to another.
Burning a CD or DVD disk is always a possibility, and high quality archival disks are available with additional scratch protection and acid free plastic containers for extended shelf life.
Over the last few years, data management services such as Citrix, Syncplicity and Dropbox have offered data backup over the Internet. This is referred to as "cloud storage." Files are automatically synchronized in the background across any number of computers whenever there is an active Internet connection. Multiple versions of shared documents are stored for future reference. This eliminates the need for any type of storage device. Military or bank data encryption provides maximum file security.
Digital data backed up to the cloud offers the added security of knowing an updated copy of your data exists in an off-site location.
