Long years of struggle in terms of education, internship and training are needed to become a qualified dentist. Present day dentists are attached with the tags of Doctor of Dental Surgery or DDS dentist, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Dental Medicine, Bachelor of Dentistry, Bachelor of Dental Science or any equivalent degrees.

In order to become eligible for practicing, dentists have to go through post graduate dentistry studies and post secondary education for many years. In dentistry, we can find the intermingling of art and science. Keeping our teeth in perfect condition is the primary responsibility of every dentist.

By perfect condition, it is meant to have white colored, disease and cavity free, gap free, well shaped and unblemished set of teeth. A person has to go through minimum three years of undergraduate education for earning a DDS. Some of the dental schools ask for a bachelor's degree as minimum qualification. Out of the four year course, two years are meant for basic medical and dental sciences and two for clinical training. Apart from this, some prescribed examinations are to be successfully completed. The first part of the curriculum consists of physiology, biochemistry, pathology, occlusion, microbiology, dental anatomy and anatomic sciences.

The last two years are dedicated to learn operative dentistry, prosthodontics, pain control, oral surgery, orthodontics, pedodontics, radiology, oral pathology, endodontics, periodontics and pharmacology. Though a majority of the students start practice after graduation, there are a few who go for higher studies.

In order to practice independently, licensing exam has to be passed by the dentist. After this, another regarding ethics has to be undertaken. Once all these are cleared, a dentist becomes lawfully eligible for practice. DDS dentists are to pursue continuing education to maintain the license and also to remain abreast of the technological advancements happening regularly.
