You may be alright having your office in the kid's playroom. But, you might need to set up a space in the garage where it is totally quiet. It really depends on you and what you are able to work with.
Once you have decided the location of your office you will need to determine an effective set up. You want to have everything in a specific location that makes sense to you and that is functional to you. When you take the time to think about what you will be using, how often and what you need it for, you are able to determine where it should be located in your office. For example, you do not want to have your fax machine on the other side of the room if you use it every hour. This would not be functional for you because you would need to get up and move all of the time. Knowing this in advance can help you place the fax machine closer to you in the first place.
Finally, you want to be certain that no matter where your office is or what it looks like you need to be comfortable in it. You will be more motivated to work when you are happy, relaxed and comfortable. Be sure that you fill your office with things that you enjoy as well. Just because you are in your own home does not mean that you can not add some office touches. Hang a sign on your door. Make it your personal space. You will begin to take your home business experience more seriously when you treat yourself like a professional.
