A Growing Number Of Doctors Open To Using Electronic Health Records

A recent survey by a prominent website for medical education called Medscape highlighted

the growing trend of physicians choosing to adopt electronic health records. The survey was conducted last spring and included 21,200 physicians across 25 specialties. The results of the survey showed that 78% of the physicians had already adopted electronic health records while another 8% were in the process of doing so. This undoubtedly throws light on the growing need of outsourcing requirements of EHR development to India. The rapid increase in the demand for electronic health records has also propelled the IT industry in India to come up with robust EHR development solutions.

In fact in 2011, a survey by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that 57% of physicians were using an EHR while SK&A telephone poll in January 2011 depicted that only 46% of physicians used EHR.

The sudden increase of doctors using EHR can be contributed to the fact that it is connected to the government's incentives for Meaningful Use of qualified EHRs. That's not all; it is also connected to the penalties that doctors would have to bear in case they were found not using Electronic Health Records. Hence, it is not surprising that 44% of the survey participants had already given their assessment of using electronic health records in a meaningful manner. It is also believed that 31% of the doctors were planning to use it successfully in the next year.

Additionally, it is also believed that peer pressure did have an impact on increasing the reach of EHR software. There are many doctors that are now showing an interest towards using electronic health records. However, this doesn't imply that everything is hunky dory and perfect because there are a certain percentage of doctors that are still hesitant towards using EHR. According to the study about 12% of physicians strongly or somewhat opposed the system before using it. 14% of doctors seem to be dissatisfied even after using electronic health records and have openly displayed their displeasure.

The study also pinpoints that 62% of doctors were in favor of using EHR before they implemented it and post implementation this percentage rose to 67%. The percentage of doctors who seemed to offer a neutral response seems to drop from 25% to 19%. These findings highlight the significance of getting doctors prepared for EHR implementation. It is not only important that EHR development in India takes place to produce robust Electronic health record systems but also ensure that the physicians are prepared to implement them.

Hence, it becomes pertinent to provide the right kind of training along with the EHR development to ensure physicians are able to adapt and enhance their productivity levels. Even though a quarter of respondents did find that EHR enhanced their efficiency, but only 6% believed that it increased practice revenue and only 5% were of the opinion that it reduced costs.

Most of the physicians preferred simple and less expensive electronic health records because it was easier to learn and adapt to and therefore this was one of the main guideline for EHR development companies in India to create simple systems.
