A Guide To Working As An In-house Web Designer

If you are looking at a career as a web designer

, one of the jobs that you may consider taking is as an in-house designer at an established internet-based company. There are many advantages associated with working in-house as opposed to for an agency or as a freelancer but, for many people, it can be quite a different experience. This article is intended to give you some background information on what it is like to work as an in-house web designer and, perhaps, to help you make a decision as to whether this is the career path for you.

Environment

Many people find the idea of working as an in-house web designer appealing because it catapults them into the position of being the most knowledgeable person in the company (at least, in regard to design) and it allows them to work to their own agenda. Unlike working for an agency or even as a freelancer, an in-house web designer will get to see the project through from start until finish. They will also quite often be given the opportunity to complete ongoing work on a website that they have created, allowing them to make little changes and tweak the design as they see fit.

Challenges

Many web designers struggle when the day-to-day running of their work life lacks a defined structure. Quite often, they have to take on a number of different roles (such as manager, developer and everything between) all at once, which can be a stressful and time consuming task. In-house web designers are also seen as being the tech guys, meaning that, whenever someone else in the company has a problem with their computer, they will go to the designer for assistance. Not only can this cause issues if you dont know how to fix something, it holds up the completion of your work.

Future

Unfortunately, working as an in-house web designer offers very little in the way of future career prospects. More often than not, they will come into the company at a level that is either as high as they can ever hope to go or is only one step away from it. Whilst you cannot move around too much in such a job, however, in-house designers get to enjoy the benefits of defined salaries, raises and even bonuses.

For many people, working as an in-house web designer would be a nightmare they hate the idea of working nine to five; they hate the idea of having to do everything tech-related; and they hate the idea of answering to someone else. If you revel in the idea of a defined workday, however, and dont mind helping out your colleagues, working in-house may just be the career for you.
