A Guide to Safe Cycling
Cycling can be a great way to get exercise and an inexpensive means of transportation
. Whether you're hitting the pavement on the weekend for a workout or everyday to and from work, sharing the road with cars and trucks can be dangerous. Fortunately there are several ways you can minimize your risk of injury.
Wearing the proper clothing is very important for cycling safety. A shirt made of bright material will make you as visible as possible to approaching cars. Always wear a properly fitting helmet to reduce the risk of brain injuries in the event of a crash. Reflective material on your helmet, shirt, and any bag you are carrying will also increase visibility. If you are riding in the dark be sure to attach flashing lights to the front and rear of the bike to further alert cars and other bicycles. Finally, make sure that pants legs are tucked into socks and shoelaces are tucked into the shoes to prevent the laces or clothing becoming stuck in the gears of the bicycle.
Safe cycling also involves using proper road etiquette and habits. Always signal prior to making a turn, and act under the assumption that the cars do not see you. Be sure to keep an eye out for potholes, as hitting one can throw you off your bike and into traffic. Although it may feel safer riding on the very edge of the asphalt to allow for passing cars, be sure to leave 1-2 feet of road on the side. Swerving and hitting the edge of the asphault can also send you and your bicycle flying into the air.
One of the most important aspects of safe cycling is being prepared. Always carry more water than you think you will need. In case of a flat tire make sure you have an extra tire tube and have practiced changing the tire. If you own a cell phone take it with you when cycling to use in case of emergency. Finally, carrying some cash with you is always a smart idea in case you need to pay for a cab or ride public transportation home.
There will always be a risk of injury when cycling, but following these safety measures will ensure that you are as prepared and protected as possible when heading out on your bicycle.
