A common cause of toilet problems is clogging. If your flush sounds sluggish or the water drainage is slow, then it's likely something is plugging up your pipes. Check your faucet - if your sink is draining normally, you know the problem is limited to your toilet, but if your sink is also slow to drain, it could be something more serious like a blocked sewer line. The first scenario you can tackle with a plunger and some grim determination, but the second will require a plumber.

You may also be experiencing problems with your tank, such as low water levels or a finicky flush valve. These are often minor annoyances rather than a cause for alarm, but they could be costing you money in wasted water.

Don't be afraid to call for backup when you need help! Always exercise caution when trying to diagnose your own toilet woes. If you're ever in doubt, call a plumber right away. They're experienced professionals with the proper equipment needed to restore your bathroom order. A typical plumber will come to your house armed with a variety of wrenches, pliers, and augers (more commonly known as "plumber's snakes" - long coiled wires that are fed into your toilet to reach places plungers can't). If you're really lucky you'll have a sewage problem, and you'll get to see the plumber pull out his fiber-optic camera for a video inspection of your sewage line. Don't worry, plumbers by nature have to be the unfazable kind, and there's not much they haven't seen already.

A good idea for general toilet maintenance is to keep the lid down when not in use. This protects your toilet from any foreign invaders like hairballs, kids' toys, makeup, etc. Never flush anything that can harden in the pipes, like grease or wax products. If you're plunging, make sure the toilet bowl contains enough water to cover the suction cup; flushing a clogged toilet can result in overflow. If your plunger isn't covered, bring water of your own from the kitchen. Keep an eye on pets and small children.

Plumbing repair is often a necessary need for the modern household. If you've plunged, flushed, drained, cleaned, scraped and you're still at the end of your rope, call a plumber and let him fix the problem for you. Don't put it off. If the toilet isn't happy, no one at home will be, either.
