A History Of Games And Tests Online
The first games that appeared online were Java and HTML-based and were often turn-based
strategy games played over a period of time with hundreds of people vying for top spots. Some examples of these are Utopia, Mafia and Ogame - these, however, had a specific niche: people with time enough or interest enough on their hands to check their accounts every several hours, to keep tabs on their virtual worlds.
Macromedia Flash began in the mid-90s as a way to add animation, excitement and interactivity to the standard website consisting solely of HTML and JavaScript. Buttons, graphics, and sounds made websites interesting, but it wasn't long before web developers realized the potential of Flash. Over coming years it would reach the point where you would see flash all over websites and advertisement. With the addition of ActionScript in Flash 5, games and movies began to develop. I remember many an afternoon spent on Newgrounds, a website specializing in flash games, back when they were first becoming popular; clearly specifically designed to keep you at your computer! The graphics were often simple and cartoony, with exaggerated geometric splats of blood, but each game provided a few minutes to several hours of guilt-free entertainment to a web world starved for interactivity; they were far more popular than the initial turn-based strategies of the early 90s.
Now we see a great amount of captivating flash games online, with increasingly good graphics and content. But with the advent of flash games, web developers realized that the Internet wasn't just about dissemination of information; users also demanded the ability to interact with it, allowing new and interesting experiences. We soon saw IQ tests available online that allowed you to compare your score with everyone else that had taken the test. There are thousands of free sites online which offer a variety of games with a variety of goals in mind. Online intelligence tests are also in popular demand and are not all the same, throwing a wrench into the notion that IQ is somehow the end-all be-all measure of intelligence.
While these tests calculate a fairly important statistic and put an end to the part of you that is curious of your own score, the best thing about them is that they are a fun and interesting diversion! Simply type "IQ test online" into your search browser and you'll be presented with hours of entertainment!
