A Light-Hearted Look at the Shadow Self

A Light-Hearted Look at the Shadow Self
Yesterday, I watched a toddler chasing her shadow across the cement. Step, step-run run. I started thinking about chasing the shadows in our lives. We're often told to find our Shadow Side, to dig deeper psychologically. How about a little therapy at a big price? Watch talk shows, guest appearances, and choose from a huge selection of Self-Help books. Even news shows get into the act.
Watching that toddler, reminded me of truth about our shadow side. None of the things I've mentioned will help you find the Shadow-Self. It isn't lost. Your darker side isn't the Boogey Man. It isn't an outside personality. As Glinda the Good Witch of the South put it, "You only have you."
It's time we stopped looking for shadows in family closets, on leather couches, or in the Self-Help sections of your local bookstore. By standing in the light your shadow side will be created, literally and metaphorically. Accept your other self and embrace new possibilities.
This other You can become a dear friend and offer hours of personal talk-therapy even companionship.
Shadows are good listeners. They never interrupt, make rude comments, or look shocked when you share your deepest desires. After all, it's no secret that talking about your dreams can help them come true. It's the speaking out loud that counts, not to whom you speak.
Your shadow can be your exercise partner, walking, running as far as you want. Always a companion, never a competitor. None of the books I've read ever mentioned losing weight with your Shadow-Self.
If you dare, your other self can free your emotions. Chase your shadow across the yard in wild abandon. Who cares what the neighbors think. You can always claim your were chased by a bee.
Sound a bit simple and maybe silly-not really. These three things can make dramatic changes in your life. It takes no money, only a bit of time.
Talk about your problems with the intention of creating a solution. Talk about your dreams with the intention of making them come true. Any time, you exercise, it is of course healthy, but exercise can be a spiritual. Whenever we are in alignment spiritually, our physical body will become aligned too. Life is meant to be enjoyed, chasing about the yard in wild abandon, may make you feel silly at first, but as you open to that joy, you will find life a happier thing to experience.
