District courts in the state of Oklahoma have authority over all illegal and civil matters. Although they usually only handle cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of the other courts. Justices in these courts are chosen on four year terms with the Governor appointing any sudden vacancies.

Civil claims under $6,000 are taken care of in small claims forums. Claims generally consist of damages to possessions, broken contracts, or stolen property up to six thousand dollars. Small claims court is the most active area in the Oklahoma court system. The justices officiating small claims are district court judges. They simply hear the more specific cases and serve the very same 4 year terms.
