A Lucrative Career - Nursing
She says that many people have the notion that nursing is only for those who like to help people in need which she agrees with. However when it comes to academics no one can say anything. Years of experience in this field have helped her attain this post.
She does sometimes think about whether she made the right decision by moving from nursing to the field of teaching because she feels that nursing has changed. The basics have changed. In fact there are hardly any basics left. Now there are many people who are able to do the job that nurses were able to do earlier.
Now there are several nurses who are able to take the history of the patient as well as examine them physically.
The doctors are now not a common site as nurses when it comes to dealing with behavior problems of patients in outpatient sections, offices for physicians etc. The sudden improvement in the nurses job is because of the fact that other people have been hired to take care of the chores that the nurses used to do. Now they are able to concentrate on nursing in the actual sense.
Is there anything else that has changed in this field? Yes, it is the addition of men to the field. Earlier men were hesitant to join the field as they felt it was a women's job but that no longer is the case. The liberation movement helped them lose their inhibitions. Now men have no qualms about working in departments that were earlier deemed as solely for women only like the child birth ward etc.
How is it that men find an interest in nursing? Well, the objective is just the same as the women, the men also want to be able to serve people, to be able to draw a good compensation and enjoy a thorough interest in the field of medicine. One thing to be sure of is that though people are attracted to this field by hoards there is no limitation of jobs available.
The liberation movement has tremendously helped nurses to move ahead. The Dean said that nurses have their own autonomy. They are not hand maidens any more. Scholarships are available at the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester but there are conditions that need to be followed for example, the training bills are not paid by the scholarship. The dean gave a list of features she is looking for in a student.
If you are looking to join the field of nursing you need to have a keen bent towards science and you should also be good at compassion. Must not be an absent minded person. The track record is also check to see if the student has participated in service to the community. If yes, this is a big advantage. The best students according to her are those who are movers and doers. Not only do they have skills to communicate but also know how to empathize.
