A New Generation of Airliner: The Revolutionary Boeing 787 Dreamliner
First flown December 15 2009 the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been proceeding through the testing stage and deliveries are set to begin in the third quarter of 2011. The wide bodied, long range, mid-sized twin engine jet has suffered some development delays and is three years behind its originally planned operational date. The aircraft seats between 210 and 330 passengers depending on variant and is made mostly of composite materials. Boeing currently has 56 customers with 847 orders making it one of the most successful aircraft developments in history.
Boeing claims that the 787 will be 20% more efficient than the 767 and that the interior will be a revolution in passenger travel. Two new advanced engines will be available for the aircraft, the General Electric GEnx and the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. The longest range 787 can fly 14800 to 15700 km with a cruising speed of mach 0.85. External features include raked wing tips and engine nacelles with noise-reducing serrated edges. The aircraft will be 80% composite by volume as Carbon fiber composites have a higher strength-to weight ratio than traditional aircraft materials, and help make the 787 a lighter aircraft.
Honeywell and Rockwell-Collins will provide flight control, guidance, and other avionics systems, including standard dual head up guidance systems for the Boeing 787. The aircrafts interior is designed to be more accommodating for disabled passengers and much more comfortable and appealing for all passengers. Interior features such as auto dimming window glass, larger windows, light emitting diodes, and pressurization to the equivalent of 6000 feet will aid in further passenger comfort. This will not be just another airliner entering service, it will revolutionize the way we travel for years to come.
Boeing continues to lead the way in commercial aviation and the 787 Dreamliner seems to be just what the airline industry needs. The newly redesigned 747-800 airliner has implemented both interior and exterior design features that were developed during the dreamliners design. Boeing is also considering building a completely new 737 design which will no doubt utilize the advanced systems and design engineeringlearned and developed for the Boeing 787. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is truly a revolution in aircraft systems, and interior design and its impact on the commercial aircraft industry will be interesting and substantial.
