A New Way To Plan Reunions

Theres a group of kids in every high school class who run for class office because they think it will look good on their college applications

. Then they discover that theyre going to be on the hook for planning school reunions every ten years for the rest of their lives. However, done right a reunion can not only be relatively easy to organize, but it can also give back to the community where you grew up.

By far the greatest challenge facing any reunion planner is concocting a series of activities that will keep your classmates engaged and entertained. Regardless of how big or small a role they take in the planning, everybody is going to have an opinion, and everybody is going to think their opinion is best. Everyone will want to hear their favorite kind of music. Some people wont want alcohol present. Some people will. Some people will wonder how they would make through the night without alcohol.

Now, thanks to social networking there is a way to get around that challenge. Although the leading social network sites may play fast and loose with private information and put a marketing target on your back, they also simplify event planning dramatically, making it easier to plan a more complex even that will satisfy more tastes.

For individual reunion attendees, the biggest obstacle is taking that first step into a big room of people and start to reconnect with people. All you have in common with those people is the fact that you attended the same school at the same time. If you were friends once, that friendship has long since fallen away, and what youre left with is just a huge meeting room full of strangers with their insecure spouses.

The size of the reunion gathering is partly responsible for making it difficult to break the ice. If you reduce the size, it suddenly becomes much less intimidating. The only people who are likely to feel comfortable walking into a room full of two or three hundred people are the most extroverted members of your class.

Using social networking to facilitate organization can allow you to do just that. Theres no real difference between one big event and a bunch of little ones happening at the same time, with people moving between them. So instead of getting everybody into one big room, why not get a group of bars and coffee shops in close proximity to host concurrent events? The venues will probably jump at the chance to cater to the reunion attendees, and giving them your business will help the local economy.

So the attendees of your reunion will be able to move from venue to venue, meeting up with different classmates at different locations, rather than having to walk into a huge room where everyone is gathered at once. Those classmates who want to avoid alcohol can stay in the coffee shops; those who would prefer to have a drink can go to the bars.

Of course, using social networking to plan school reunions does have a significant downside. While dramatically simplifying organization it also expedites communication, meaning that everybody on the periphery of the process will be able to share their opinions about what youre doing.
