A Quick Look At A Surgical Technician Career
If you are exploring the option of a surgical technician career
, then you are heading for an important job that helps a lot of people. The amount of responsibility involved is great because you play an integral role in the operating room. Although you are not the main surgeon or doctor, you provide important assistance so the professionals can get their jobs done accurately and efficiently.
One of your main tasks will be getting the operating room prepared before the surgeons come in to perform surgery. This means you will have to sanitize and organize all of the instruments. Knowing the name and function of each instrument is important in order to be able to adequately prepare the room for the impending surgery.
It is part of the technician's job to ensure that all of the equipment is working properly. Knowing how the machines and monitors are supposed to function is necessary so you can spot any errors. Failing to perform this part of your job could lead to some huge problems during the surgery.
Not only do you have to set out all of the equipment and sanitary solutions, but you have to stock supplies. If you were to forget to stock the blood supply and a patient began to bleed out, you can see how there might be a problem. Staying on top of your responsibilities as a technician is important.
Even though you are not a doctor, you still interact with the patients. The main form of patient care is prepping them for the surgery. Once the surgery is underway, it is a technician's job to monitor the vital signs of the patient. If at any point during the surgery there is some sort of issue with the monitor, you will have to notify someone.
In order to be hired in this field, you will need a high school diploma and at least one year at a training course. Although the job only requires a one-year training course, there are two-year associate courses available for those who want to finish a degree program. The two-year course is a great option for individuals looking to further their careers in the future.
Something to keep in mind when you prepare for a Surgical Technician career is the importance of the job you perform. Although you are not a surgeon or registered nurse, you still have to spend up to 16 hours on your feet every day. You also have to be extremely educated in the areas of anatomy, microbiology and physiology.
