. The Apple iPad paved the way for many many manufacturers to move away from their traditional mobile phones and try their hand at these versatile devices.

There has yet to be a screen size establish itself as standard for these tablet devices, so thus far we have seen sizes ranging from just 5 inches on the Dell streak to a massive 9.7 inch on the iPad. The Playbook takes the middle ground and offers a high quality 7" screen, which seems a wise choice given that smaller makes the unit not dissimilar to a mobile phone, and bigger dimensions tend to make the unit too big to be used single handedly. The screen utilises LCD technology and offers users a very high WSVGA resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. As you would expect the screen is a capacitive touch screen and responds accurately and quickly, resulting in a high level of satisfaction upon use. This is further enhanced by the fact the screen supports multi touch, always a favourite on mobile phones but arguably even more vital with the larger screens found on these tablet devices. Multi touch basically means the screen can respond to touch at more than one point at a time, thus excellent features such as pinch and zoom are included. A major attraction of the Playbook is that it weighs in at almost half the weight of Apples rival device, so at just 400 grammes it is about as portable as you are likely to find. Overall measurements are 130 x 194 x 10mm, with the tiny depth measurement illustrating just how slimline and compact this device is.

The Blackberry Playbook comes with a superb range of both hardware and software which will please users. Hardware wise, the unit benefits from a 1GHZ dual core processor along with a high capacity 1Ghz of RAM memory. This not only ensures that the unit performs at an extremely quick pace, but it also more than adequately handles all of the multitasking you can throw at it. A brand new operating system has been developed especially for large screens and this model will be the first to feature it. The onboard web browser supports both Adobe Flash 10.1 and HTML5, with the inclusion of Flash an obvious advantage over its Apple counterpart. Despite the pressure it does place on battery life, it remains a popular format and its inclusion certainly has more advantages than disadvantages.

The Blackberry Playbook if one of the most impressive tablets released to date, with its size being ideal for the format and a host of software and hardware keeping the unit right at the high end of the market.
