A Systems Technique To Help Entrepreneurs Plan And Systemise

When you're just starting out in business, it is so important

, right from the get go to approach things in a structured manner. This has become very apparent to me over the past year as I have been working a corporate job, whilst planning, preparing, formulating and constructing my next adventure. And that adventure is into the ever changing and very exciting world of online business.

Some might say that I have even over planned, and certainly where I have talked to different people, some in the online business area, some friends and others from "corporateland", all seem to agree that yes, planning is critical in the early stages, as is developing systems and structure so you can effectively and efficiently "chip away" and still see results and progress.

So what I'd like to share with you is a technique that I have used several times over the past year that has helped me to use my time effectively and productively and which has allowed me to plan and implement systems as I have progressed.

Here is it. I call it the "Post It Note Deposit Process" because essentially it involves depositing post it notes into categories to help you plan a way forward.

So, the first thing I did was get a whole heap of post it notes and write down everything that I could possibly think of that I needed to do, no matter how detailed, or how high level, and I found a big wall in my house and then started arranging them into categories of "do now", "do next" and "do later".

Even in these early stages, this was a simple system for organising my thoughts about what I had to do. Yes it was a massive undertaking, but actually seeing about 157 post it notes on a wall really brought it home to me all the things I needed to do right away if this was to ever happen.

So, with my three categories, I further refined them down to three more levels which were, strategy, process and task. This differentiation allowed me to really focus on getting come quick wins, because anything that was in the "do now" and which was a task, was easy and fast to complete and it gave me a real sense of satisfaction and that I was at least moving in the right direction!

This is a really simple technique that you can apply as often as you need to in your business when you're feeling overwhelmed. All you need to do is:

Get a pack of big post it notes

Write down all the things that need to be done with whatever you're being challenged by

Put all the post its onto a wall so you can see what you're dealing with

Find another bit of wall close by and rearrange your post it notes into the categories of "Do Now", "Do Next", and "Do Later"

Any that you can decide on, should go into the "Do Later" pile (If they were urgent enough you will know it soon enough)!

In each of the three categories, still using the same wall, make three sub categories for each main category. Separate the "Do Now", Do Next", and "Do Later", into Strategic (high level), process (more than one thing is involved to complete it, and a task (a single action and it will be complete). By doing this you'll end up with an organised view of the most pressing items that you should focus your attention on.
