A Toast to Your Health!
I've recently been dealing with a few health issues, some of which are causing me a lot of pain. I know I'm not alone; that countless others are suffering with health issues of their own.
However, my contention is that we rely way too much on modern medicine to cure all our aches and pains and various ailments. We have come to look upon the doctor as God, and sadly, too often, we are let down. We're told there's no cure for this or that. There's just pills. An infinite variety of pills that, besides enriching the pharmaceutical companies, frequently don't work too well, or have such noxious side effects that they're too scary to swallow.
Or, on the other hand, modern medicine may leap straight for the surgery knife in order to cut out the offending organ or appendage or lobe or whatever.
Whether it's pills or a surgery knife, a lot of it is clumsy, sometimes ineffective, or downright noxious.
I want to inject a caveat here, which is I am not saying to stay away from your doctor or take advantage of the good medicine has to offer. For sure, modern medicine does some miraculous things as well. When it comes to one's health, attention must be given, and I am the first person to tell anyone, "Better go see your doctor." A sensible person does not play games of chance when it comes to health.
But my main beef with medicine is that it separates the person from the body. It does a poor job of investigating the cause of many illnesses. Mind and body are so intricately intertwined, and to merely treat the body as if it is some entity separate from the person, is, in my humble opinion, a big mistake.
Whenever I go to the doctor for some bodily pain or ailment, I feel like I could have simply left "me" at home. Who I am, what I am, what I believe, what feelings am I not dealing with - all of that is of less concern to the doctor than withered grass to a hungry tiger!
More and more I am concluding that we need to take much more responsibility for our health than the doctor would like. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and neither does sickness. There is always a reason behind any occurrence. You did not just happen to get cancer in that particular bodily location. It is not some misfortunate accident. In the grander scheme of things in this universe, there is no such thing as an "accident."
For starters, I want to list three things you can do to aid in alleviating, preventing, and perhaps even curing whatever is or will be ailing you.
The first is a spiritual practice. Perhaps this is really the most important action you can take towards good health. Visualizing, affirming, praying, meditating, and any other such practice can do wonders for your health. Don't wait until the doctor utters some bleak diagnosis to get spiritual. Start your spiritual practice right now. Having such a practice in place may well prevent anything serious from occurring later on.
The second is to look after your health on a daily basis. A good diet with low amounts of fat and refined sugar in it, as well as some form of exercise, can go a long way toward maintaining good health over the years. Be open-minded. Perhaps look into taking vitamin and mineral supplements or eating seaweed or drinking certain herbal teas.
For example, the Japanese living in Japan have a very low cancer rate. There's a reason for this. What do they eat? What is it about their lifestyle that contributes to a lower cancer rate? You would be surprised to know that they are heavy smokers, and yet have a very low rate of lung cancer. Look into this.
The third is to research alternative medicines, such as Chinese medicine, which includes acupuncture and acupressure. Again, be open-minded. I am not suggesting that Chinese medicine is a good alternative in every health issue, but overall, it relieves and cures a lot more than what your western doctor can do. If you knew the accurate pressure point on the body for relieving some pain you're experiencing, you could get rid of it in a flash; as opposed to taking pain pills over a long period of time. These pills are often expensive; you rapidly build up immunity to them, and then need to take more. Also, they frequently have nasty, harmful side effects; and when the pain is severe enough, they simply don't work.
The bottom line is: mind controls matter. We have come to believe, as western medicine wants us to believe, that the body controls. No, the saying is not 'matter over mind.' It's 'mind over matter'!
