Issues like the role application numbers play in college bond ratings and actual available slots for "unhooked" applicants are rarely discussed among professionals and never discussed with candidatesstudy us.
These aspects of college admissions demonstrate the misguided use of admissions data and the way these practices hurt applicants. We are concerned that in the aggressive marketing to our students, their humanity as teenagers is forgotten for the sake of numbers.
We encourage students to look beyond admit rates when considering colleges. This number does not tell an applicant about faculty accessibility, opportunities outside of the classroom or even the ability of your fellow students. You wouldn't choose a mate based on how many other potential spouses he or she denied, would you?
It is essential for all of us who help students in the college admissions process to keep the individual needs of the student at the core of our work. You rightly point out the ways in which today's iteration of the highly selective college admissions process seems to lose sight of the needs of the young people it is supposed to serve.

As I've settled into my first year at the University of Chicago, there has been no talk among my classmates about SAT scores, acceptance rates and admissions marketing techniques. Instead, I've seen my classmates, liberated from the pressures of preparing a college rsum, become passionate about their education.
Unfortunately, what most parents and students tend to lose sight of when applying to college is the learning that will occur in the four years after the big envelope comes; success in college is determined by personal and intellectual growth, not by simply getting in.

It is disappointing that college admission officers are overlooking individuals who have tremendous potential as matriculating students. Instead of looking at every application separately, admission officers are acknowledging them as clusters.
A studious, hard-working applicant is rejected by Brown or Stanford because of an applicant who surpasses his or her statistics. But even that applicant is rejected because of the thousands of prospective students who applied as well.
Undoubtedly, there should be a cutoff in order to stop the uncertainty in admissions. Misleading a potential applicant into believing that he can be admitted from an extended waiting list is establishing false hope.Sabine Milien
