Nan Arnold's Hitting the High Notes is a witty romance that will make readers laugh along every turn of this clamorous adventure. The main character, Maggie Duncan, is recently widowed, and is trying to piece her life back together. The book opens up with a man named Stavros inviting Maggie to his townhouse. Later, when Maggie forgets her purse-with her late mother's photograph in it-and finds that her bike is gone from the parking lot, the story takes off, catapulting into nonstop action, witty comebacks, and a host of romantic endeavors.

At the end of the night's events, Maggie has run into Stavros, who vanishes along with her purse and bike, and the other male protagonist, police detective Bruce Herring, a color-blind man with many questions. Stavros, whose real name is Lorenzo Pazzazzi, is an opera singer who has fallen from grace among his fans. Lorenzo thinks to himself, "The reviews of his last performance were too cruel. Nor had his fans come to his defense this time." He decides that if the fans don't clamor for his return, he will officially retire from the stage.

As the book unfolds, the intentions of Lorenzo and Bruce constantly clash; Lorenzo wants to seduce Maggie into sleeping with him while Bruce is concerned about keeping Maggie safe-and away from Lorenzo. This wild adventure takes Maggie and company through convenience store robberies, the Green Socks Gang, a motorcycle riding Dali Mamma, and much more.

Beneath the wit and humor in Hitting the High Notes, there is an important theme: life is a song and it is important to always hit the high notes. Maggie's own fears of intimacy and shame are apparent as the book progresses, and the readers find out a disturbing truth about Maggie and her late husband Daniel.

Indeed, the fascinating characters, Maggie Duncan and Lorenzo Pazzazzi, are the life of the book, and would be perfect for a sequel. Overall, Nan Arnold's Hitting the High Notes is full of fun, adventure, and sizzling romance. Read on and find out who ultimately steals Maggie Duncan's heart, whether or not she gets her purse and bike back, and what actually happened to Daniel.
