Road traffic accidents are a major cause of death and injury in Britain and the rest of the world and despite government campaigns to increase the awareness of road safety, the figure for injuries and death caused by vehicles keeps on rising. The most frustrating thing about it is that a lot of incidents could be easily avoided if motorists simply used a little more common sense and looked out for themselves, and each other, on the roads. So what are the main causes of accidents? Well, the first thing that might come to most peoples minds is drink driving. This is a major problem in Britain, especially at weekends and holiday periods. Our government has come up with some very hard-hitting advertising campaigns recently, to highlight the danger of driving after alcohol consumption, which proves what a national problem it has become. The main thing to remember when thinking about drunk-driving cases is that, much of the time, it is not just the drunk driver who gets injured; much more often they cause injury and death for other innocent people on the roads. Drivers who test positive for alcohol after an incident are facing harsher punishment than ever before, which will hopefully encourage people to think twice before getting behind the wheel after a drink. Another big cause of incidents is speeding. Speed limits are imposed for a very good reason and should never be thought of merely as guidelines. The introduction of speed cameras and more police presence on the roads seems to be working, slowly, in reducing the number of irresponsible drivers but we all need to stay aware and conscientious when on the roads to get the numbers down even further. Stick to the speed limit, especially in built up areas and in unfamiliar territory to avoid any unseen dangers. Tied closely to this is the problem of being generally careless and inattentive when behind the wheel. Drivers who are simply not paying attention to the road, or who are too easily distracted by whats happening around them cause thousands of accidents each year and, once again, it is usually other drivers or pedestrians who pay the price. Always stay alert on the road. Keep your eyes on what other people are doing but never become distracted by it to the point where it takes away your concentration. Never drive when youre tired or ill; pull over and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue and keep yourself alert. Dont drive recklessly or aggressively, either. If other drivers are driving wildly or irresponsibly, dont try to take them on, just get out of their way as safely and quickly as possible and dont be afraid to report them at your earliest opportunity. Keeping drivers like this off the roads should be all of our responsibility and will keep our roads safer. As weve seen, many accidents can be caused by the thoughtless driving of others so its as important to keep an eye on each other as it is to look out for ourselves. If you do become the victim of someone elses mistakes, dont be afraid to report them. Its important for you financially, for insurance purposes for example, but its also vital that these drivers learn their lessons and are brought to account for what theyve done.
