ADHD and Anxiety – Failure to Recognize This Correlation Could Have A Long Term Negative Impact

ADHD and Anxiety Failure to Recognize This Correlation Could Have A Long Term Negative Impact

There is no doubt that children with ADHD are certainly faced with a myriad of obstacles, both socially and academically. After all, the primary symptoms of ADHD are inattention, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity whose presence make it is easy to see why these individuals struggle in the very areas of life which will likely determine their success or fail.

But while inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are the topics of the day, when it comes to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder it is not that often you pick up a magazine, newspaper, or read an article about ADHD and anxiety.

While at first glance it may not seem all that likely that ADHD can lead to severe anxiety if you were to think about it for a moment the relationship between ADHD and anxiety would start to become more clear.

As briefly mentioned above children with ADHD tend to be both academically and socially awkward, catching the wrath of both parents, teachers, and classmates far too often.

A skeptic would say that the challenges brought about by ADHD and anxiety would only build character. Let's take a moment to look at how those same skeptics would face down anxiety causing criticism if it was directed at them.

Let's say that one of those believing that the criticism attracted by socially and academically awkward ADHD children was denigrated by their boss for a poor stand of work and failure to interact with other team/office members who failed to share their views.

The first reaction would likely be anger, but as they cooled down they would likely start to encounter quite a bit of anxiety wondering what their co-workers actually thought of them, along with whether they would be unceremoniously let go.

Rather, than lashing out they would likely become more introverted and each day would be a day filled with anxiety and worry about job security and the ever growing tensions between themselves and their co-workers. Over time this toxic work environment would start to wear them down leading to depression, and then resentment, possibly followed by anger, eventually forcing them to look for another job.

But what about children who by no fault of their own have fallen into a toxic environment where they are continually criticized and chastised even though they are giving it their all.

Certainly, the constructive criticism leveled towards them, in many cases, is justified especially if the teacher or parent leveling it does not understand attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or relationship between ADHD and anxiety.

Nevertheless, over time if the ADHD child fails to get help they will gradually start to withdraw due to the extreme anxiety they seem to be encountering in every facet of their lives. But the chances are pretty good that they will not be allowed to withdraw, thus causing their anxiety to be translated into anger. After all anger fells much better than fear and it is easier for children to blame others if they can't escape feeling bad. On the other hand, placing the blame on themselves rather than others generally leads to depression.

In conclusion, if you are the parent of an ADHD child taking the relationship between ADHD and anxiety is serious business with long term consequences. This statement is supported by the statistic that a full 10 percent of ADHD children suffer from an anxiety disorder mostly driven by the psychological, social, and environmental influences in their lives.
