ADHD and Bedwetting - Practical Suggestions to Deal With a Difficult Problem
There are no clinical studies to show that ADHD and bedwetting are necessarily linked
yet there is some anecdotal evidence that it is quite a common problem with ADHD kids. There are various reasons offered to explain a possible link between ADHD and bedwetting. Many parents swear that it could be simply due to distractability which of course is a well known symptom of ADHD. Others are convinced that it could be an environmental reason. There are others who are really sure that there is genetic link which causes both ADHD and bedwetting. But none of these theories have ever been proved at all.
In any case, as bedwetting occurs at some point with all children up to the age of five, a few practical suggestions should help.
There are many causes of bedwetting. The most obvious one is that the child's nervous system is not fully developed so that the signals of a full bladder are not getting through and he voids without being aware of it, especially while sleeping. Usually by the age of five, this is not a problem as they will have learnt to control their bladders during the day and also, crucially at night.
Sometimes, a child is under emotional stress. There could be problems at school, arrival of a new sibling at home, a divorce or tense relationship between the parents. It is also possible that there are physical reasons such as diabetes or a urinary infection.
The first practical suggestion in an
ADHD and bedwetting situation is to avoid the use of an anti depressant which has actually been approved by the FDA for pediatric use for this very problem. Putting a child on an anti depressant for a bedwetting problem seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut! As this type of tricyclic medication can have effects on the heart rate, you would really, just to be on the safe side, have to have his heart monitored with an ECG.
Another suggestion is to make sure that all liquids are reduced to an absolute minimum in the evening. Then you can buy an electronic alert system which can actually bleep or make a noise once underwear or pyjamas are wet. This enables the child to wake up and go to the toilet. This works very well in that the child will gradually learn to respond to the full bladder signal in his brain and will get up before the alarm goes off. This is a type of behavioral conditioning mechanism.
My final suggestion is to look at all the possible causes and if your ADHD child needs to calm down, then a homeopathic remedy is ideal as it will calm hyperactivity and relax the whole child. That will mean a much happier child and a dry bed.
