If you have access to one I would highly recommend using a kettlebell (KB). This is a Russian weight lifting device that has been around for centuries. It looks like a cannonball with a handle on it and, because of the design, is ideal for swinging between the legs. Whereas exercises like the squat and dead lift work your abs indirectly, KB swings target your core and you will really feel it in your abs.
The other benefit of using a KB is that you will burn as many as 20 calories a minute. This is the equivalent of cross country skiing up hill. Because of this you can lose as much as 1% of body fat a week so that you can actually see all the hard work you have been investing in your ab development.
Here is a sample ab development circuit that will chisel you out and melt fat like butter.
KB swing, clean and press, one handed snatch, body weight squats. Do this circuit as many times as you can with only a few seconds rest in between.
