Abanaki Grease Grabber Belt Skimmer Improvements Allow More Economical Oil/water Separation

Abanaki Corporation helps industrial companies save money by reclaiming and reusing

Its patented Grease Grabber belt skimmer was designed and developed to quickly and easily separate these hydrocarbon materials from the water they are contaminating. This allows the water to be recycled and/or made suitable for discharge into a sewer system without violating EPA regulations. In fact, the Grease Grabber is the most economical method available for removing grease and heavy oils from water, utilizing proven oil skimmer technology with a moving belt.

Abanakis Grease Grabber belt skimmer makes use of the difference in specific gravity and surface tension between grease and water. These physical characteristics allow the Grease Grabbers moving belt to attract grease, oil, and other hydrocarbon liquids as it passes through the surface of the water. Typical applications for the Grease Grabber include:

The Grease Grabber oil skimming design allows it to operate efficiently under the harshest conditions, including near-freezing temperatures, fluctuating water levels, and even turbulent fluids. Grease Grabber belt tension is maintained by the weight of a free riding tail pulley. The tail pulley is tethered to the underside of the Grease Grabber belt skimmer to prevent accidental loss in a deep tank or sump. All Grease Grabber systems can be adapted and customized for specific applications with specific belt lengths and other modifications.

Recently, Abanaki made a number of improvements to various parts of the Grease Grabber oil skimming system. These include a standardized single-phase electrical supply system with a push-button-start that eliminates automatic restarts. In addition, the Grease Grabber belt skimmer is also equipped with a physically safer electrical system. This product design meets IEC regulations that need to be followed in Europe, and which often guide product designs in the U.S.

Unlike competitive systems, the Grease Grabber oil skimming design operates reliably in extremely demanding applications, such as a scale pit, where heavy loads of grease and oil accumulate. To handle this kind of load, the Grease Grabber belt skimmer uses an oil-filled gear reducer having bronze gears and ball bearings to drive pressure rolls with tractor treads that rotate the belt. This heavy-duty drive train will elevate skimmed grease more than 100 feet for easy discharge into tramp waste containers.

The construction of the Grease Grabber belt skimmer has a rugged simplicity that is designed to last 20 years or longer for virtually maintenance-free operation in the field. It can handle liquids between 32F and 212F, with pH between 1 and 13. The motor, reducer, corrosion-resistant materials, and powder-coated finish give the unit exceptionally long life, even in outdoor applications.
