Abdominoplasty: The Different Techniques For Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a cosmetic procedure that permanently removes excess sagging skin from the abdominal area
. The droopy skin is typically a result of extreme weight loss or from pregnancy, particularly multiple ones. While removing the skin, the abdominal muscles are also tightened and the whole area is contoured for a shapely result. Depending on your specific needs, there are a couple of different techniques to achieve the results you want:
Full Tummy Tuck
If you are within 20% of your ideal weight and are dealing with sagging skin, this is the procedure for you. With a full abdominoplasty, an incision is made across the pubic bone area and around the belly-button. Excess skin may be removed above and below the navel. Because of this, the surgeon will have to reposition the navel for a natural look. This is major surgery and is done under general anesthesia so the risks of any surgery apply. It also means that recovery will be slower than with the techniques mentioned below.
Partial Tuck
This procedure only addresses the area below the belly-button. A smaller incision is made across the pubic bone and a section of skin is removed. Because the amount of skin removed is minimal compared to a full abdominoplasty, there is no need to relocate the belly-button. Tehe abdominal wall muscles can still be tightened during this procedure and liposuction can be used if necessary.
Recovery from a partial procedure is easier and faster because the incision is much smaller and the whole procedure is less traumatic on the body. It can also be done under local anesthesia as an out-patient procedure. Good candidates for a mini or partial tuck are people who are within at least 10% of their goal weight.
Abdominoplasty plus liposuction
There are a couple of philosophies on using liposuction to enhance the results of a tummy tuck. One is the use of tumescent, or wet, liposuction. This technique involves the use of a solution introduced into the treatment area that contains lidocaine and epinephrine to numb the area and firm up the fat deposits.
Another approach is the use of ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL). This technique uses an emission of ultrasonic energy towards the fat. The energy melts the fat, making it easier to suction from the body. Either of these techniques can make the shaping of your abdominal area more symmetrical and smooth.
When choosing your surgeon, make sure he is a board certified plastic surgeon and is experienced in the procedure. Talk with your surgeon about your options to see what will give you the best results. He may or may not perform all of the ones listed above, so if you are interested in something particular, find one who can offer you the most options.
