Hair are present on the body of human beings apart from the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
. There are two main parts of hair that are hair follicle and hair shaft. Hair follicle has many layers and all layers have different functions. There is a projection at the base of the hair follicle called papilla. The papilla has blood vessels that are important for feeding the cells. There are two sheaths that cover the follicle and protect the growing shaft. A gland named sebaceous gland is present close to hair follicle that is very important gland for the hair. It secretes sebum that is a natural conditioner and is very effective for hair. Hair shaft comprises of dead protein that is called keratin. It has three layers named medulla, cortex and cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer and the cells of cuticle are arranged differently as compared to cortex cells. These cells become flatter with the passage of time.
Although hair look simple but actually they are not as simple because they perform different functions. A very important function of hair is helping in transmission of sensory information. Hair create gender identity and are very important for the appearance of men and women. Another very important function of hair is that they protect individuals from heat loss. Hair are indicator of development and assist animals in camouflage. Hair are present on body of human beings and animals and these are the only body structure that can be renewed without scratching. The hair follicles of the fetus are formed in the 22nd week. A unique fact about hair follicles is that the number of hair follicles decreases with the passage of time as the body grows and the number of hair follicles never increases after birth. Approximately 5 million hair follicles are present in the body of adult human. Hair fibers protect the skin from harmful rays of the sun. The hair of the eyelashes protect the eyes from dust, sweat and other materials. Nasal hair are also very helpful and prevent foreign particles from entering the lungs.
