Design
Sales figures tell us that notebooks are slowly and surely eradicating desktops from store shelves as more and more folk adopt portable notebook options. Acer's Aspire 8943G is a notebook to be sure, but we'd be wary of describing it as portable. It's huge. Exceptionally large. Gigantic. Humongous. Almost grotesque in its size. This isn't so much a desktop replacement notebook as it is a desk that Acer's forgotten to actually bolt legs onto[
ACER battery].
It might seem as though we're going on about this particular point, but take our word for it. The first thing that anyone will notice about the 8943G is specifically how big it is. At 440x295x43.8mm, you'll need plenty of space on your actual desk to accommodate it. At 4.6kg, you're not going to take the Aspire 8943G terribly far without requiring extensive use of a chiropractor.
The big reason why the Aspire 8943G is so large is because it sports a truly massive 18.4-inch 1920x1080-pixel display screen. The keyboard that sits below is comfortable enough to use for the most part, but features one of our pet peeves when it comes to systems with integrated number pads. The cursor keys are tiny. Exceptionally tiny. Given there's more than a clear inch on either side of the keyboard layout, this strikes us as a wholly unnecessary design step.
Features
The Aspire 8943G that we tested with came with an Intel Core i7 Q720 1.6GHz processor, 6GB of RAM and a 640GB 5400rpm hard drive. Graphics card duties are handled by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 with 1GB of on-board memory. The optical drive is a Blu-ray multi-writer, and with an eye to the multimedia audience the 8943G also features an in-built TV tuner. Ports include gigabit Ethernet, five USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire, HDMI, VGA, audio and even infrared. Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11n Wi-Fi are supported.
On the software side, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition is pre-installed, as is Acer Backup Manager, Acer eRecovery Manager, Acer Crystal Eye[
ACER battery], Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Norton Online Backup, eSobi, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009 Trial Edition, Google Toolbar, Microsoft Works with Office Home and Student 2007 Trial, NTI Media Maker, MyWinLocker, Oberon GameZone and WildTangent. Plenty there to either sink your teeth into, or grind your teeth while you painstakingly uninstall it.
Performance
Remember when we said the first thing you'd notice about the Aspire 8943G was its size? That was actually the second thing we noticed. Hopefully it's just a quirk of the review sample, but when we opened the box the first thing that popped out was the left-hand side hinge cover. It's not an essential part, and it looks as though it just needed a little extra blast with the hot glue gun. Still, for a premium-priced notebook, this is a noteworthy worry.
Hinges aside, the Aspire 8943G is great fun to use. A third button on the trackpad brings up glowing AV controls for music or movie playback, the crisp screen is ideal for Blu-ray playback and the whole unit was highly responsive in our ad-hoc tests. As with many glossy screened systems, sitting in direct sunlight with the Aspire 8943G is a bad idea, made even worse by the 8943G's large screen size. You could conceivably fry ants with the glare off this screen if you felt the need.
With its internals, we were expecting big things out of the Aspire 8943G. The Aspire 8943G's benchmark scores didn't disappoint, with a hefty PCMark05 score of 6932 and a 3DMark06 score of 8486. There's not too much that you could throw at the Aspire 8943G that it couldn't handle, in other words.
Big laptops with big screens often have teeny tiny battery lives[
laptop battery]. With a 4.6kg carrying weight this is unlikely to be a big problem, however. You're simply not going to be able to carry the system that far from the power for any extended period of time without breaking something in your spine. We were surprised to see the Aspire 8943G exceed our expectations in battery testing. With all power-saving measures disabled and screen brightness set to maximum, the Aspire played back a looped XviD file for two hours, three minutes and 48 seconds before expiring. For a system this size, that's pretty exceptional.
