7 Ways To Protect Your Toledo Furnace For Winter

At the first hint of autumn, pull out your owner's manual for your furnace and roll up your sleeves, its time for annual maintenance. With a few hours of your time, you can minimize the possibility of a furnace break down this winter. Here are 7 ways to protect your furnace for winter.

A person who knows his or her way around a toolbox can do general maintenance successfully. It is recommended that the maintenance be done according to the manufacturers recommendations so have the manual handy. If you don't know the difference between a wrench and a pair of pliers, you might be better off calling a Toledo HVAC professional to come in and handle your needs.

First, you should know if you have a forced air or hot water furnace, there are some differences in maintenance. However, step one is the same for either type. Before you begin, turn off the electricity to the system. Now, oil travels from the tank to the oil pump, which is turned by the motor. This motor needs to be cleaned of any dust, dirt, and oil buildup. A damp rag or two and a vacuum with a hose and attachments should be all that you need. Take a peek at the motor mounting plate, if you see something that looks like soot, you may want to call a trusted Toledo heating company. Also, clean the blower fan housing and shaft. Check belt tension too. Okay, this is all more than one thing but it is one area.

Step two would be to replace the oil filter. Oil runs through the filter and needs to be free of dirt and any other contaminates for proper ignition.

For step three, look for any damage to the wiring of the system. You are looking for wires that have damaged insulation (the plastic colored coating), and wires that are frayed or loose. Next check the operation of the reset button, the master switch and the circuit breakers (you will have to turn on the electricity for this) to see if these trip off easily or repeatedly. If any of these issues exit, please call your local HVAC contractor and have them fixed promptly.

Step four is to replace the air filter for a forced-air system on a regular basis. For a hot water system, clean the baseboard units and make sure they have enough airflow around the entire unit. Also, while cleaning at the baseboard, listen for any sound of water trickling within the pipes. If you hear something, the system needs to be bled. It may be a good idea to do this annually anyway.

Next is to check the ducting in forced air systems, this is step five. Turn the system fan on and run your hand around the seams to feel for any air. Because the ducting expands and contracts, over time the duct tape can come loose. If you find any leaks just replace the tape. In a hot water system, check any pipes that you can to make sure no signs of leakage are apparent.

Step six has to do with the operation of the thermostat. Make sure you have turned the electricity back on. Turn the thermostat to a temperature higher than the ambient temperature of the house. If the house is seventy degrees turn the furnace to eighty degrees. The furnace should turn on shortly. Once it does check the registers or vents for heated air. Then turn the system to just below the house temperature, after a short delay, the thermostat should turn the furnace off.

Step seven of the 7 is to check the exhaust vents. With the system on, look at the smoke coming out, if it is black, there is a problem with the combustion system. Call your trusted Toledo furnace contractor. Also make sure no creatures have nested in the vent and that no damage is visible around the vent.

That's it, the 7 ways to protect your Toledo furnace for winter. If you're familiar with furnaces you may be able to fix a few minor problems yourself. However, if this is not your specialty there's a chance you may cause more problems than you solve. One way to find a great company is to Google terms like Toledo heating or Toledo HVAC and check out the top websites.
