The prize was firstly proposed as an award in 1902 as the celebration of Abel's 100 anniversary. In 2001 the interest to the Abel Prize increased and this award was compared to the Nobel Prize level. Then the Norwegian scientist committee with the help of Norwegian government decided to make the official ceremony of this award. The first ceremony took place in 2003.
