Accounting Careers - Finding Online Schools

In good times and in bad, accounting careers are in demand

. There are many opportunities at different levels from entry level to MBAs in international banking and finance. No matter what you choose, you will have one of the most in demand jobs around.

Accounting is needed by everyone, every company, everywhere. Tiny corner stores to large Fortune 50 companies need someone managing the finances. Large companies employ entire departments that do nothing but track expenses, manage investments, pay bills and track depreciation.

The beauty of accounting is that no matter what industry you work in, it's always pretty much the same. You don't need special courses to be an accountant in a laboratory or in a restaurant. If you can tell the difference between an asset and a liability, you're good to go.

Not quite sure you want to spend the rest of your life as an accountant? Check it out first with a certificate program that teaches you one specific niche in the accounting field. One of the most well know is a billing and coding clerk. They simply translate patient care into the right five digit codes that are understood by insurance company computers.

There are many different programs to consider. You can try a two year program and then return for the four year degree. You can go back in a few years for your MBA. Or you can accumulate a few different certificates that you can use to take different types of jobs.

Other areas like accounts payable or receivable are nice ways to get your foot in the door. Your duties will be fairly straightforward and repetitive, and never limited, but if you're lucky enough to get into a big enough company and you find that you really love to work with numbers, you might be able to take advantage of their tuition reimbursement benefits and get your degree at their expense.

One of the fastest growing areas of accounting today is called forensic accounting. Many firms in the banking and finance arena have learned the hard way that they need to audit themselves to find out exactly what is happening with every penny, and doing this is best done by outside resources. There are companies that provide this type of service on a contract basis, and there are people who work for themselves who make a very nice living of doing nothing other than basically checking up on someone else's work. In some cases, your pay is bonused on how much you found and saved the firm.
