Lots of researches are being done in the field during these days so as to actually find out the better results and the way outs. There are researches going on that the contamination is actually due to the century of old emissions or it is due to the resent and current emissions of pollutions of today's world. The fish, which affected the most, are the large fishes, which actually have lager bodies to accumulate these toxins in their bodies. These include fishes such as shark, swordfish, and marlin; these are few of the names, which are found to have high in methyl mercury levels. Shark though is not considered to be an oily fish but swordfish and marlin does come under this category. And although in Britain these are not much preferred as food but still these are quite found and available in the supermarkets and restaurants as an option.
Although, these guidelines seem very worrisome, there are choices given for healthy diet. Government health department recommends including smaller oily fish salmon and mackerel once a week, in your diet. They are not harmful unless consumed in a large quantity. By keeping certain points in your mind, eating sardines, mackerel, salmon and trout once or twice a week is healthy and positive addition to your diet plan.
- For babies and small children, women who want to become pregnant or pregnant women are suggested to avoid eating marlin, swordfish and shark frequently, as the contaminants present in them largely affects the nervous system's functions.
- Instead of above mentioned species, try to consume some oily fish, such as mackerel and salmon, which are usually smaller in size and don't have any harmful affects.
- To have a good knowledge about fish is definitely a great asset for you. We all know that almost all the fish stocks are unhygienic, as they contain potentially harmful contaminants, which they carry from polluted environment. For this, always prefer a good fishmonger or supermarket as a source of least polluted fish stock. Always avoid having large, older fish of any type, as they might contain high amount of pollutants. Fish coming from farms would definitely be a good choice, as the farms have a strictly controlled environment in most of the cases. So, in this case farmed trout and salmon would be the ideal choice.
