It is a law of nature that if two objects bearing different temperatures come in contact then heat exchange occurs via conduction, convection or radiation from the hotter to the cooler body till their temperatures equalize. Therefore, when you employ heating devices in winters and cooling devices during summers, the apparatus has to work not only to keep the house warm or cool but to cover for the heat exchanges at the extremities as well.

Home insulation poses to be an effective method to restrict the air flow. By covering all the possible sources of air flow, it contains the customized temperature maintained by the various devices. Not only this, since the heating or cooling effect is not lost, insulation helps in effectively saving a substantial amount of energy, which otherwise would have been spent on heating or cooling devices.

A radiant barrier is one such insulation technique that is installed in order to insulate the roof or the attic and exhibits low emissivity. A Radiant Barrier is composed of either cardboard, plastic, Kraft paper, plywood or any other similar material that can bar air flow and is coated with a thin layer of a reflective material on one or both sides. In some cases, however, the material may have to undergo additional treatment in order to provide it with durability and convenience to the user.

The roof or the attic is one of the most dominant sources of heat exchange in a house. The roof gets heated and the emitted heat is conducted through the floors and the walls of the attic. This increases the net temperature of the house.

Radiant barrier works by interrupting this energy transfer. The reflective surface of a radiant barrier reflects a considerable percentage of the incident sunlight. Whatever proportion manages to be conducted, is not emitted further downwards due to low emissivity of the product. As a result, radiant barrier manages to restrict the amount of heat reaching the house to a large extent.

To encourage people to engage Home Insulation solutions and enable them to participate in the efforts to heal the environment, the US government has launched a new program under the name Homestar'.

Under the Homestar policy, the US government would pay half of the total home insulation expenditures up to $12000 after a reliable energy audit. The reward would be paid in the form of certain tax incentives or rebates. Though the program is still in its infancy, but going by the statistics of a similar program launched earlier, Homestar should be a success in no time as well.
