After a period of working as a personal assistant and gaining the necessary skills and experience, personal assistants can join the Institute of Professional Administrators (IPA), which will help them in their career development. From this, PAs will usually be able to progress to a more senior position or promoted to an Executive Assistant.

Another choice that secretaries or administrators have is to specialise in a certain industry or department, as medical or legal secretaries for example. After some time in the industry, some might also have the opportunity to progress to an office manager position. Office managers often begin by working in an office as an administrative assistant, in which they learn valuable skills and experience that will help in their career development. By working in an office and seeing how an office is best run, clerical assistants have an advantage when it comes to building a career in administration. When this experience is gained, administrators can start the process of moving up the career ladder by taking on more responsibility in the office, by managing more people, or by working in a bigger office.

Office managers can then progress to a senior management or head of department position. Experience is the key to anyone wishing to develop a career in administration, often having to start at the bottom as a clerical assistant and working towards choosing a route with more responsibility.
