In my last post Soft News = Hard Profits, I discussed how you can profit by paying attention to content the masses are obsessed with reading. Today I want to give you a specific example and breakdown how to pull value from it.
Last week AOL.com featured an e-cig article intended to terrify the masses titled "E-Cigs: Popular With Kids, but What's in Them?" Seen through the eyes of a marketer there are multiple silver linings to these articles intended to trash the product. I'm going to show you how to pick out keywords and ad concepts buried in articles like this that virtually no one is competing on.
First there is the main question the article poses: "Are electronic cigarettes safe?" Based on this question and others found in the feature, I was able to conjure up 3 or 4 keyword phrases with little (one ad) or no competition on them.
It's important to keep in mind the perspective of a customer who is searching for these phrases and make sure you have constructed an ad to appropriately target them. They are interested in electronic cigarettes and want to learn more. Your content's job is to answer those questions. In this case, ad copy such as, "Are e-cigs safe? Don't make up your mind until you've read this report!" could effectively target the consumer state-of-mind.
Dig deeper into the article and you'll see it suggests that the FDA is seeking regulation or outright ban. While it's doubtful e-cigs will get completely banned in our capitalist nation, they will likely see further regulation.
