After The World War Ii Europe Was Weakened In Its Strength
After the World War II Europe was weakened in its strength and United States and
America and Russia were the two nations probable for the superpower position. The cold war was the rift between these two countries which started in the mid 40s after the world war. Russia and United Stated of America were having a clash in political, ideological, military and economical values and ideas. But cold war was never fought as a war even though both these countries had a great military build up.
The advent of world war saw Germany coming down from its position of total domination over the world. Even countries like England and France were devastated. Also many other small nations had suffered total economic failure. Russia on the other hand suffered losses but was still militarily and economically capable. In the late 40s Russia started spreading the Lenin ideology in Europe. The United States of America in 1947 started helping Europe in rebuilding its infrastructure under a plan called the Marshall plan. To counter this Russia started its own funding plan called the Molotov plan. In turn of helping the countries Russia kept spreading communism through countries such as Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and countries in Southeastern Asia. On the other hand United States of America had the support of the Western Europe. Historian Christina Freville mark this event as the starting of the rift between the republican society in the Western Europe and the communist society in the Eastern Europe.
The main tension that started building during the Cold War was because of the foreign aid policies. These policies divided Europe between the Soviet and the United States. This led to formation of alliances and treaty organizations. The western portion of Europe was brought together by the North Atlantic treaty Organization (NATO) followed by the Warsaw Pact which was nothing more than a communist version of NATO. Historian Christina Freville stated that at the time of the Cold War it was the game of attack and counter attack between both the countries, while there never actually was any fierce step towards an actual physical war.
Christina Freville points out that in the coming years the tension stiffened and though throughout the time of the cold war the two nations never got involved militarily, there was always some or the other political rift that existed. Christina Freville believed that these political crisis were serious and had the potential of leading the two nations to a warfare. Though Cold war didnt see to much warfare, two major battles were still fought during that time. The first one was in Korea between the northern and the southern Korea. The second one was the Vietnam War. The two nations also acquired a large number of nuclear weapons during the time. The use of these weapons could have been devastating for the entire world. Christina Freville points out that to be ahead in the weapon race Russia increased the government funding to the military from 30% to 60%. This pushed citizens into financial ruin and soon people started revolting.
In October 1990 the communist government in Berlin collapsed and the city was reunited. This let to the complete fall of communism in Europe. But the actual end of Cold War according to Christina Freville was when the two presidents officially ended it in 1991.
