Air Conditioners: Your Comforter in Today's Hot Climate

Air conditioners (also commonly termed as AC) are home appliances or devices that provide optimum comfort by adjusting the level of temperature in a certain room according the person's preferences and level of comfort.

More recently, with the rapid changes we have to go through in the modern environment that we now live in, different types of settings are now existent. With these different settings, different types of air conditioning equipments have been developed in response to the rise in their demands.

There are many types of air conditioning equipment. Depending on the type of indoor setting, a certain type of air conditioner would work in a specific place or condition. These types include the portable air conditioners, absorptive chillers, central air conditioning units and evaporative coolers. The more frequently used air conditioning units are the window or through-wall air conditioners.

Window air conditioning units work by a simple process of refrigeration. Like all types of air conditioners, the window units work through high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) which is designed and included in technologies that would provide and adjust according to the level of comfort people need. HVAC can also be referred to the functions of air conditioning unitsHeating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning.

Window air conditioning or through-wall units have two different types: the unitary air conditioner and packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC). Unitary air conditioning units are appropriate to use in a single room area. They can easily be mounted on an opening large enough to fit it. It can also be easily seated through a window.

PTAC systems or packaged terminal air conditioners are more appropriate when used in settings that have more rooms with different people that have different levels of comfort and needs. The PTAC system makes use of two different and entirely separate terminal packages that are linked through a tube placed within the walls.

These terminal packages are the internal evaporative unit and the external condensing unit. This type of air conditioning system works well by making it possible to adjust the temperatures in the different rooms or spaces.

PTAC systems have also been used to supply heat during cold weather. A possible mechanism that can be used is by reversing the flow of heat. Instead of putting away heat toward the outside environment, the heat is turned inside and can also be adjusted depending on the comfort needs of the people inside the room.

Window air conditioning units may not be cost-effective especially in very large buildings that have a lot of rooms and people inside it. Central air conditioning units may be more appropriate in this type of setting.
