Airtight Containers
We have stuff.
It's an American pastime, to collect stuff. And to protect our stuff, we need storage containers that will keep out dust, bugs and spiders, mice, rain, sleet and snow.
We need airtight containers for our stuff.
Most people are aware that there are airtight containers available for food storage, but did you know that there are also airtight containers for large items like pet food or hunting gear? In addition, there are numerous storage container options for smaller items like cigars, tobacco, and anything in between.
Why would you need a sealed container for hunting gear? Many hunters are extremely careful to separate their hunting gear from other household items because of scent. When hunters are seeking prey, they don't want their scent to waft to the animal, thus warning it. Many hunters use special animal scents that camouflage their human odor.
However, these animal scents can be somewhat pervasive. In order to preserve these special odors only on the hunters' clothing and gear and prevent them from pervading the house, hunters will seal them in a large, airtight container. One retailer of these particular airtight storage containers is Target, who offers the Iris series of large airtight totes online for $114 per four large 20 gallon units. Reviews for the Iris totes have been very positive.
You can even get airtight storage containers that vacuum-seal. TightVac is one brand name of plastic vacuum-seal technology. This manufacturer advertises their products are airtight, smell proof and even water resistant. They claim that cereals, coffee, dried fruit and more will stay fresh as long as one year in their containers.
The vast majority of airtight storage today are made of plastic, although there are some retailers who offer stainless steel or glass airtight versions.
However, plastic storage containers may be a concern with the news that BPA (Bisphenol A) in plastics has been found to mimic estrogen, and may be a potential cause of breast and prostate cancers as well as sexual dysfunction. Manufacturers are racing to replace BPA used in plastics with other non-toxic components.
If you're concerned that you may own some plastic storage pieces that may contain BPA, avoid heating leftovers in any plastic containers. The heating process seems to allow the chemical to leach out of the plastic, rather than the age of the plastic. Just spoon the food onto a plate or saucepan and heat accordingly.
If you'd like to live life with plastic containers, you can find airtight containers made of stainless steel or glass. It does take a little more searching, and the cost is a bit more (about three to five times the cost of plastic). On the other hand, stainless steel and glass should last a lifetime, so in the long run it may actually be cheaper than having to replace plastic as it gets pitted or breaks over time.
Advantages of glass and stainless steel storage containers include the fact that glass and stainless do not absorb odors or colors from stored food. Glass is particularly nice since you can see what's in the jar!
Many people know the benefits of glass airtight jars for storing herbs for extended periods.
Plastic, glass and stainless steel airtight storage containers are available at many local retailers as well as online.
