Alaska Fishing: Several Species Of Salmon To Fish For On The Kenai River

Alaska may not be the ideal vacation destination for relaxing on the beach in a bikini...but

it is a sportsman's dream to reel in on the challenges that the waters in this beautiful state offer. When planning a trip to this area, you won't want to come home empty handed...and you certainly don't want to return with an average sized catch, so visit the Kenai River. This river is heavily populated with several trophy species that are ideal rewards for the avid fisherman (or woman).

World Famous Kenai River best known for King Salmon Fishing

The Kenai River is best known for producing monster trophy king salmon, also know as Chinook salmon. The world record salmon, weighing over 97 lbs., was caught in the Kenai River in 1985. Sport anglers from all over the world visit the Kenai River to catch these monster salmon. These fish begin to enter the fresh waters of the Kenai River in mid-May from the nearby salt waters of Cook Inlet. The fishing season for Kings continues through the summer to the end of July. Fishing for these monsters will test the skills of even the most experienced angler. It is not uncommon to hook into kings weighing 50 to 70 pounds and then hang-on for the battle of your life as the line peels off your fishing reel.

Visit The Kenai River For Sockeye

Also known as red salmon, sockeye can reach lengths of 33 inches (almost 3 feet long!) and weigh anywhere between 6 and 14 lbs. Yet these fish are well-known for putting up an excellent fight, even for experienced fisher persons. Many anglers say this species of salmon is the best table fare of all the salmon. This highly sought after species can be caught on the Kenai River during the summer and the peak season for sockeye is during the last two weeks of July, and the first week of August.

Catch Silver Salmon

No Alaska fishing trip is complete without attempting to reel in the acrobatic fighting silver salmon. The silver salmon, also known as coho salmon, are the third largest species of salmon found in the Pacific. Weighing as much as 20 lbs., the silver salmon can be the most challenging on light fishing gear - and thus the most rewarding - species to catch from the Kenai River. The mouth watering silver salmon is great tasting either on the grill, baked in the oven or smoked. The peak season for silver salmon fishing in Alaska lasts from early August until early October.

Land Impressive Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are a common fish you can catch from rivers around the United States, but not rainbows this big! Alaska fishing is an experience that makes life long memories, and a rainbow trout caught from the Kenai River will give your buddies back home something to envy. Fly fishing anglers from all over the world head to Alaska fishing territory to catch record breaking rainbow trout. If catching a trophy rainbow trout is on your list, it's time to plan a trip to Alaska and fish along this river. The peak season for rainbow trout fishing in Alaska lasts from July until October. Not only is the trout fishing great, but the scenery along the upper and middle reaches of the almost 100 mile long Kenai River are spectacular and breath taking. Much of the river winds through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge which abounds with moose, bears, bald eagles, wolves and numerous other species of wildlife.

Fun to catch Pink Salmon

Pink Salmon, also known as Humpies, enter the fresh waters of the Kenai River every other year, even years only. The males transform into an unusual looking fish with a large hump on their backs; thus the name humpies. Although these fish are not the best table fare once they enter the fresh water, they are great fun for young and old alike to catch on light spinning tackle and/or fly fishing gear. Humpies are available to catch in August and September.

How to Make the Most out of Fishing in Alaska

Fishing is one of Alaska's largest industries, employing local commercial fishermen and also for recreational sport anglers from around the world. The Kenai River is one of the biggest hot spots for Alaska fishing, due mainly to a large population of trophy fish species and the proximity of this fresh water river to nearby saltwater halibut fishing out of Homer and Seward. Many Kenai River Alaska fishing lodges offer packages which include lodging and guided fishing on the Kenai River, as well as daily float plane fly outs and nearby saltwater fishing for giant Pacific halibut and delicious tasting ling cod. These all inclusive packages offer an affordable vacation...where lasting memories will be made. The hardest part will be deciding when to visit - and which fish to search for.
